9) Convection
1) Learning about Convection:
Add these notes to your booklet and answer the question
The spread of heat due to the movement of particles in LIQUIDS and GASES is called CONVECTION. More heat is transferred in liquids and gases by CONVECTION than be conduction. Whereas the particles in a solid have fixed positions and can only vibrate, the particles in liquids and gases can only move about. They can easily carry their heat energy with them, spreading heat to other parts of the substance. The spread of heat due to the movement of particles in liquids and gases is called CONVECTION.

Question: Why is it that convection cannot occur in solids?????
2) Experiment: Potassium Permanganate Convection
A) Set up the experiment exactly as shown by placing a 500 mL beaker on the tripod, then hold the straw so it firmly touches the bottom of the beaker, then add water so the beaker is almost full and finally add the potassium permanganate crystal to the bottom of the 500 mL beaker using a straw. REMEMBER: DO NOT TOUCH THE CRYSTAL WITH YOUR HANDS B) Observe and sketch the movement of the colour through the water C) Explain why this occurs. Use the MOTO below |
Heat an object ----- particles vibrate more and spread out ----- decrease in density ----- move upwards
Cool an object ------ particles vibrate less and come closer together ------ increase in density ----- move down wards
Cool an object ------ particles vibrate less and come closer together ------ increase in density ----- move down wards
