Topic Overview
The Brain is the most remarkable organ – capable of doing an amazing array of tasks that allow us to function as a living, social organism. Scientists are still discovering just what the brain is capable of doing, as well as what can go wrong with it and how problems might be corrected. Conditions such as dementia are having an ever-increasing impact on our society. This topic allows to students to begin to discover some of the wondrous things our brain is capable of, through a scientific look at the types of information the brain receives and how it interprets this data. |
Learning Intentions - CORE
- Explain the role of the central and peripheral nervous systems in controlling and coordinating the functioning body.
- Describe neural pathways involved in reflex actions.
- Describe the function of sensory receptors.
- Explain the role of the endocrine system in coordinating body functions.
- Identify hormones produced by some endocrine glands and their effects on the body.
- Describe the interaction between the nervous and endocrine systems to coordinate the body’s responses to internal and external stimuli.
- Explain how the body’s systems work together to maintain a stable internal environment that keeps the body functioning at its best.
