3.8) Conserve, Protect and Sustain - Coal Seam Gas
Task 1) Background Information
Write this information into your exercise books to gain a basic knowledge of the two main gases used in Australia - Natural Gas and LPG.
a) Natural Gas is a type of fossil fuel (crude oil, coal and natural gas) that is abundant in Australia. It’s often called ‘natural gas’ because it’s a naturally occurring hydrocarbon (a particle made of hydrogen and carbon atoms). It’s colourless and consists mainly of methane (CH4). Natural gas also contains smaller amounts of natural gas liquids (NGL - ethane, propane, butanes, and pentanes), and non-hydrocarbon gases, such as carbon dioxide and water vapour. Natural gas is delivered to Australian homes in underground pipelines. In homes, it is used for heating, various appliances and hot water. Natural gas is also used to create fertilisers, generate electricity, power trains, cars, buses and trucks and manufacture various products such as glass, steel, plastics, paint and fabrics. Finally Natural gas in used in peaking generators, which are ideal for meeting peak electricity demand and supporting intermittent renewable energy sources as they are much easier to start-up and faster-reacting than coal-powered generators. Most of the time, natural gas is extracted by drilling well deep into the ground to reach gas deposits.
b) Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is produced during crude oil refining or is extracted during the natural gas production process. It is a mix of propane and butane gases and has a variety of uses. It is delivered to Australian homes in 45kg cylinders and is most commonly used for heating, Australian barbeques and fuelling many vehicles.
