Another Amazing Example of how Scientists can fix things - Naki'o - a very brave dog
A mixed-breed dog who lost his four paws after being stricken with frostbite has been given a second chance at living a normal life with his new prosthetic paws. Naki'o was rescued as a pup after his former owners abandoned him in a foreclosed Nebraska home. |
Group Technology Task: Solutions to a Human Health Issue
Due Monday November 18th 2019 Describe, using an example, how developments in technology OR changes in scientific knowledge have contributed to finding a solution to a human health issue Please limit to 9 minutes From the list of technologies shown, select a technology and create TEACHING LESSON with a handout (that has activities such as a worksheet, a fact sheet, a quiz or crossword, lollies etc) explaining in detail the workings of the technology and how it can be used in the treatment of a disease. Your focus is to TEACH the class! Your Presentation must follow the rules provided. a) CAT scans (technology) b) MRI scans (technology) c) Ultrasound scans (technology) d) PET scans (technology) e) Organ Transplants (technology) f) Artificial Limbs (technology) g) Treatments for Asthma, diabetes and Heart disease (science) h) Osteoporosis (science) Each member must run 3 minutes of the 9 minute lesson and have a powerpoint/video and/or a handout and/or activity for their component. Lessons to work on this project: 1) Tuesday 12th November 2) Wednesday 13th November 3) Thursday 14th November - only period 1 |

5.2.2) Science to the Rescue - Cholera Case Study
Task 1) Write two paragraphs (approximately 20 - 24 lines) that outlines how Dr John Snow used Science to solved a real world health problem.
In the mid-19th Century, a fatal epidemic hit London. In one corner of London, approximately 500 people died within ten days. Dr John Snow set out to investigate the cause to try to prevent more people from dying. In those days people used pumps to draw water from wells deep below the ground. He took very detailed notes about the people who had died and came to a stunning conclusion that a lot of people didn't believe straight away. After some convincing, the town eventually listened to Snow's strange suggestion to stop the spread of the illness. His idea worked and the deaths stopped. To create your response, follow these instructions 1) Paragraph 1) Write about what Dr John Snow did to solve the problem - Watch the three videos below and create brief notes about the steps that Dr John Snow did to solve the problem. You will not need to watch all three videos completely but skip sections that are not needed to develop your response. 2) Paragraph 2) Write about how Dr John Snow used Science - Relate his steps to the steps in the Scientific Method using the handout provided. |

5.2.3) Some Health Solutions are Contentious
Some of the technologies that we use to treat disease are contentious such as organ transplantation from deceased people. Different people will view the situation differently depending on their understanding of the science and their life experiences. Lets have a class discussion around the following questions
i) Do you agree or disagree with the use of organs from deceased people? ii) Why do you think some people would be against transplantation? iii) Let's watch this video to see why some people are against transplantation. iv) Quick research time - see if you can find some other reasons why people are against transplantation? |
