Is it possible that we could cause our own extinction?
Shark Tank Forum Presentation with 300 word Abstract
A) Presentation Talk with PowerPoint
For the Shark Tank Forum, your group will present a possibe strategy or product that can be implemented to reduce the impacts of your groups's focus area. Your group must convince your peers that it is your Focus Area that could one day cause the extinction of humans and that you have the solution to prevent this from happening!!! Your presentation must contain three important sections of information: 1) The Focus Area with the various issues outlined - address the many issues associated with your Focus Area and how humans are involved in causing the problem. 2) How the Focus Area impacts on humans in relation to our possible extinction - include a history of the problem, solutions that have been used in the past and an assessment of their effectiveness as well as provide both the direct and indirect impacts summarised into a flow chart. 3) The Strategy or Product that can be implemented to reduce the impacts of the Focus Area - explain how it works, identify strengths and weaknesses of the solution and why it is the best solution. Remember your solution must be PLAUSIBLE, SCIENTIFICALLY POSSIBLE, INNOVATIVE and COMBATS the impacts. High quality data must be included to support your claims. The Google Doc must contain the research for all three areas with the sources provided. Also your group must provide the relevant data/evidence to support your claims. |

Marking Criteria for Presentation
Each group's presentation will be marked according to the provided marking rubric. The following criteria are very important: * Overall quality and professionalism of the presentation by the student - no palm cards or notes used. * Quality of the student's participation in the project. * Quality of the student's responses to questions. * Quality of the student's feedback during question time of other projects. |
B) Feedback from Panel:
The panel of your peers that your group presents to will ask questions to help the class evaluate the likely effectiveness of your proposed solution and whether or not to invest money in your solution. In order to prepare for this, your groups should think about: 1) Issues relating to the implementation of your solution 2) The time frame in which your solution is likely to produce noticeable benefits 3) How realistic the proposed solution is. |
C) Allocation of Funding for Projects
After all groups have presented, each group will be allocated $700,000 to invest in the strategies (ie groups) that they think will be most effective in preventing the possible extinction of human. The budget may be wholly awarded to a single group or may be divided and a precentage given to up to three groups based on the ability to prevent human extinction. You cannot invest in your own project. Investments for each group will be added to determine the class's decision on the group with the best project. |
D) Abstract of 300 words
An abstract is a mini summary of your final research and product. It is used to clearly state the aim, background information, findings and significance of what you have done. It should be quite short (no more than 300 words) and clearly state the important aspects of your work. It should include: 1. A BRIEF outline of your key area of research 2. Why you researched this area (e.g. why is it significant and to who) 3. One or two relevant pieces of supporting evidence (data) 4. An outline of the solution you came up with 5.
