1.1) What are we made of..... ATOMS!!
In this section we are going to look at all the different substances around you are classified. This is usually in terms of elements, compounds and mixtures. But what are ELEMENTS, COMPOUNDS and MIXTURES????

Beautiful and Interesting Elements
Everything around you is made of ELEMENTS
Let's identify the elements in various items around our room!!!
Practical: Metals for Breakfast

17. Determine the chemical formula for sulfuric acid (left) and hydrochloric acid (right) using the diagram below. Yellow represents sulfur, Red represents oxygen, green represents chlorine and white represents hydrogen.
Chemical Bingo!
Practical: Create a Non-Metal called Hydrogen
Aim: To form the non-metal, Hydrogen
Equipment: 2M hydrochloric acid, HCl Magnesium strip Test tube Method: 1. Place the piece of magnesium into the test tube 2. Add 2 mL of HCl to the test tube 3. Record your observations Results: Questions: 1. Discuss what evidence there is that a new substance is produced. 2. Is hydrogen a solid, liquid or a gas at room temperature? 3. Use the periodic table to state the following for hydrogen: a) chemical synbol b) atomic number |
Safety
Hydrochloric Acid is very corrosive. Take care to ensure that it does not touch your skin or clothing. If it does wash off with cold water and tell your teacher immediately!! |
POU: Element Mandala
Date Due: Monday 23rd Feburary
In pairs, students are going to create a COLOURFUL Element Mandala which will be placed around the laboratory. This can be done on your computer or by hand. The circle for your mandala should just fit on an A3 page as we want them as big as possible. Your Element Mandala must contain the following information:
|
NOTE: Curium and Uranium are very very large atoms so no need to draw atom diagram on mandala!!!
The following interactive periodic table is really good with lots of information about elements. Also the NOVA Elements app is very good and free! |
